LAKELAND MAYOR SCOTT CARMICHAEL ADVISED OF RECERTIFICATION OF LAKELAND PARKS AND RECREATION PROGRAM
Lakeland Parks & Recreation Department Awarded Tier I Benchmarking Status
Lakeland Mayor Scott Carmichael was recently advised by the the Tennessee Parks and Recreation Benchmarking Program that the the Lakeland Parks and Recreation Program Tier I Benchmarking Status was successfully renewed.
Executive Coordinator Thad Jablonski successfully applied for recertification for Tier I Level Benchmarking status, which recognizes the ongoing achievements in recreation/leisure services and by demonstrating compliance among a range of benchmarked performance standards. Retired Parks and Recreation Director Brenda Lockhart successfully prepared the original certification.
In announcing the recertification, Mayor Carmichael recognized the efforts of Thad Jablonski and Brenda Lockhart in this significant achievement for the Lakeland Parks and Recreation Program.
The Tier I Benchmarked status will allow the City of Lakeland to streamline grant applications in upcoming grant cycles as well as earn additional points during scoring of grant proposals. The recertification is in effect for five years, the certificate valid until June 2018.

NEXTDOOR.COM USEFUL TOOL FOR NEIGHBORHOODS
NEXTDOOR.COM USEFUL TOOL FOR NEIGHBORHOODS
“Nextdoor.Com” is a web site currently used by over 16,000 neighborhoods for communication within neighborhoods. This website is used for neighborhood watch, keeping up with neighbors and events, finding someone to assist in a small task, checking references etc.
“Groups” can even be set up within the network (such as runners, golfers, walkers etc.) and items and services wanted or for sale can listed.!
Nextdoor.com can be set up as a private neighborhood communication website so ONLY neighborhood residents can access the network. In addition, it can be set up to allow limited access by designated persons outside of the network.
I have gotten calls from residents asking about this and my research indicates “Nextdoor.Com” is wonderful for community and neighborhood development!.
I encourage Lakeland residents to check this out at “Nextdoor.Com” and say “yes” when asked if you wish to join the “Nextdoor.Com” network for your neighborhood!

THIRD QUARTER 2013 “ART IN CITY HALL” EXHIBIT
Featuring Oil Paintings by Sandy Scruggs
Sandy Scruggs is the City of Lakeland’s featured artist for the July-September Quarterly “Art at City Hall” exhibit.
Sandy was first introduced to oil painting in 1979. Her first instructor was Jewel Armstrong, whom she spent 3 ½ years learning the style and techniques of the old masters. From there she attended various workshops and began focusing more on the works of the Impressionists and their use of color. Sandy was part of a local group of artists who went to France to study art history by touring Paris and the surrounding area, and with classroom instruction at the College of Art in Angers, France.
Since 1999, Sandy has devoted much of her creative energy to instruction and encouraging others who share her love of art. She enjoys capturing the beauty of nature in her landscapes and still-life's. Her true love is the challenge of painting animals. Her works may currently be seen at Market Central and Fountain Art Gallery, of which she has been a member for 15 years in Memphis, TN. Visit her website at www.sandyspaintings.com.
Artists interested in being considered for future exhibits may contact Joy Cloud at 867-2717 or jcloud@lakelandtn.org.
