Lakeland Senior Center-New Activity!
BOOK CLUB
Beginning Wednesday, May 1st from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m., Lakeland Senior Center!
Lakeland resident Jeannine Dillard is hosting a Book Club at the Senior Center beginning in May.
The first meeting will determine the viability of forming a Book Club, which will depend on turn-out among interested participants.
If enough participants attend the initial meeting, then a “Book the Month” will be chosen.
The group will decide on a day to return to discuss thoughts and opinions on the book. The person that makes the final decision of the book to read that month will act as the host/hostess for the discussion meeting for the chosen “Book the Month”.
The Lakeland Senior Center is for persons 55 or older

MPACT! HOW COMET AND ASTEROID IMPACTS SHAPE HUMAN SOCIETIES

By Dr. Gerrit Verschuur
In 1996 Gerrit published a book entitled “Impact! The Threat of Comets and Asteroids” and a great deal has happened since then related to understanding the way cosmic impacts have wiped out several ancient civilizations.
For example, back in 540 AD the Dark Ages, and the plague that preceded, it may have been precipitated by impacts of several comet fragments. The reality of the threat of objects from space causing great damage to life on earth was brought home in February when the Russian fireball injured 1,200 people. Gerrit is now working on a new book on the topic and will present a general talk that will show how ancient descriptions of fire in the sky can be linked to comet impacts. Given that in November of this year a huge comet will pass so close to the sun that it may become the brightest ever seen in recorded history makes this talk even more topical.
The Lakeland Senior Center is for persons over 55 years old.

REPORT UNWANTED/IMPROPERLY DELIVERED NEWSPAPERS-HELP STOP SURFACE WATER POLLUTION ADN LITTER!
Unwanted newspapers on your lawn, driveway etc? We recently have received complaints about unwanted newspapers littering driveways, yards and city streets.
Newspapers have the right to deliver newspapers (whether ordered or not in many cases) by throwing them on residential lawns.
However, if you DON"T want the newspapers and leave them on the lawn (or note them delivered to vacant houses etc., or just sloppy or careless delivery creating litter problems), please CALL THE NEWSPAPER and advise them. Legitimate newspapers do not want to create litter problems and want to know if you do not want the paper on your lawn or of problems being created by delivery of the newspapers.
Newspapers (and other illegal leaflets etc.) can create serious pollution of our surface water and create substantial damage to drainage facilities.
Leaflets, baggies with rocks etc. are always illegal and considered litter. Please report all such litter to City Hall at 901 867-2717 or Action@lakelandtn.org.
A number of newspapers deliver by throwing a free newspaper on all lawns. If you find an offending newspapers, please call the newspaper and ask them not to deliver to your address (if you don't want the paper) or note problem areas where the newspaper is improperly delivered.
