Republic Services, a private waste hauler serving the Memphis area (including the City of Lakeland, Tn.) released a statement Monday, saying Teamster-represented employees "have engaged in a work stoppage.
"The company said its managers are now working routes and additional Republic employees "are being brought in" to provide waste and recycling service. Garbage collection for Lakeland is to resume on Wednesday, January 30th. Monday trash pickup will be Wednesday, Tuesday pickup will be Thursday, etc. Please keep informed by visiting our website at
www.lakelandtn.gov for further information or call City Hall at 867-5409 or 867-2717.
"There will be some delays, but service will be provided," the company said in a statement. "We are committed to taking care of our customers and our employees."
Officials with Local 984 of the Teamsters previously have said the Republic Services, though highly profitable, is seeking to replace contributions to employees' pension fund with a less beneficial 401(k) plan.
The company has said that employees driving its waste trucks in the Memphis area make an average income of about $58,000 a year, about a third more than the median household income in Shelby County. It contends the union pension fund is unstable.
The union voted to authorize a strike in November.

LAKELAND RESIDENTS TO PROVIDE INPUT ON RECREATION PLAN
Robert Wherry, City Manager
Fifty Lakeland residents will be asked to participate in a “Focus Group” to discuss recreational needs and facilities for Lakeland. The Lakeland Board of Commissioners approved the proposal to provide for Lakeland residents' input to guide the Park Board, Board of Commissioners and City staff in identifying recreational needs and future recreational facilities in Lakeland. The program will start in the near future and is a partnership with the Recreational Educational Services (RES) division of the Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation.
The method of selecting the 50 residents to serve on the Focus Group will be announced in the near future. RES will perform an assessment and strategic plan for the city parks system. The 50 residents in the Focus Group will discuss recreational needs, including recreational facilities.
Objectives include:• Assess the City Park System.
• Determine preferred recreational facilities for Lakeland.
• Increase resident input into park and recreation planning.
• Evaluation of the Lakeland vision and mission for park and recreation services.
• Develop a framework for residents to set priorities for recreation planning, including setting priorities.
• Establish short, medium, and long-term objectives for the Lakeland Park and Recreation System.
• Create a system to guide the implementation of the park and recreation system for Lakeland residents.

SUMMARY OF DECEMBER 2012 SANITATION STATISTICS

2. Comingled: Current Month down 16% over the same month last year and up 2% year to date over prior year to date.
3. Yard Waste: Current month down 15% over same month last year and up nearly 15% year to date over prior year to date.
4. Garbage: No change in percent for the current month compared to prior year month and up 6% year to date over prior year to date.

Currently only about one in four Lakeland residents recycles. This is the lowest amongst all of the communities in Shelby County.
Lakeland's “Get Caught Recycling” program is to encourage the people who haven't taken the time to recycle in the past, and to reduce the total amount of material that is hauled off to the landfill. Each month, 4 lucky residents that have at least three different types of recycle material in their bins are awarded $50--recycling literally pays off in Lakeland!
Household addresses are selected in a random drawing and a City representative checks the bins at the houses in the order of the draw. The winners "caught recycling" are invited to the Lakeland Board of Commissioners meeting the following month for recognition by the Board, and to receive their checks. Items that can be recycled and qualify for the contest are glass, metal cans, aluminum cans, plastics (remove caps and leave labels attached), newspapers, and cardboard boxes broken down to fit inside the recycle bin. Recycle and you have a chance to win $50.
RECYCLING
Super Bowl weekend is coming up, and folks will be buying beverages in record numbers. Unfortunately, many will take a pass on recycling their empty bottles and cans, and millions of beverage containers will have career-ending injuries unless we commit to recycle them.
Nationally, the estimated 650 million beverage containers sold over the Super Bowl weekend. The amount of trashed beverage containers represents a substantial loss in resources. For example, if recycled, there would be enough clear plastic bottles to make 780,000 t-shirts, 173,000 team sweaters or enough carpeting to cover 52 playing fields. Each aluminum can recycled saves enough energy to run a television for nearly three hours, roughly the time it takes to watch the Super Bowl. And glass can be recycled over and over again into new glass, saving energy each time.
Recycling bottles and cans is easy if you just have a good game plan. For example, if you are expecting guests for the game, simply set out a separate box or bag near your trashcan that is clearly marked for recycling empty bottles and cans. Super Bowl weekend is a great time to remember that recycling is a big win for the environment. Those bottles and cans deserve a chance to get back in the game, so let’s all make a commitment to recycle.
