"Tech Tuesdays" in June

SENIOR 55+ COMPUTER CLASSES

Computer classes for seniors 55+ in basic computer skills, such as Microsoft Office, internet and email will be held every Tuesday in the month of June.  Tech Tuesday classes will begin June 5th and will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeland Senior Center located at 4527 Canada Road.  Bring your own laptop computer.  Free wireless internet is available.  There is no cost for this activity.

BINGO FOR SENIORS 55+

All seniors are invited to come out on Thursdays for an exciting game of BINGO!  Relax, have a cup of coffee, enjoy yourself and socialize with friends and neighbors at the Lakeland Senior Center, 4527 Canada Road.  Be the first to get five across, down, or diagonally and you can win a small prize!  Bingo games will be held weekly on Thursdays from 9 a.m. -11 a.m. beginning on Thursday, June 7th.  The is not charge for tis activity.

I-289 Corridor Planning Meeting Scheduled Thursday, June 5, 2012 in Lakeland

An Open House on the planned land use along the I-269 Corridor (now Highway 385) is scheduled for Lakeland from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 7, 2012 at the International Harvester Clubhouse, 4523 Canada Road in Lakeland.  

I-269 will affect the north side of Lakeland, including two interchanges (Brunswick Road and Stewart Road).  All residents, and especially residents in this area, are encouraged to attend.

The Open House is sponsored by the Metropolitan Planning Organization.  Lakeland residents are encouraged to attend and comment.  Additional information is available at the MPO website or this flyer on the meetings.

Municipal School Election to be set August 2, 2012

The Lakeland Board of Commissioners are considering adopting an Ordinance for a referendum on creating a Lakeland Municipal School District on August 2, 2012.  Agenda is at Lakelandtn.gov or CityofLakeland.com.

The referendum on raising the local option sales tax to 2.75% (a 1/2 cent increase) is also set for August 2, 2012.

If adopted at the special meeting, the Public Hearing on the Ordinance will be Tuesday, May 22, with the second and final reading scheduled on May 29 or after.

The creation of a Municipal School District also requires that the City of Lakeland contribution 15% of our assessed taxable valuation (approximately $500,000) to the Lakeland Municipal School District.

I-40 and Canada Road maintenance

The I-40 and Canada Road interchange is maintained by the State of Tennessee.  For a variety of reasons, the City of Lakeland  cannot work on property not owned by the City of Lakeland without an easement or other legal authority.

City Engineer Philip Stuckert has advised the Tennessee Department of Transportation schedule for the next maintenance of the I-40 and Canada Road interchange is:

      1.  Pickup trash during the week of April 23, 2012

      2.  Mow the right of way during the week of April 30 to May 4, 2012

Anonymous letters are a one-sided conversation!

We appreciate comments, suggestions and complaints from Lakeland residents about the Lakeland Community.  Resident comments, suggestions and complaints have frequently helped change the future of Lakeland.

Recently I received an articulate letter with some excellent comments and suggestions about Lakeland.

However, I was unable to follow up on some of the comments because the writer did not include a contact number, name or address.  The writer essentially was having a one-sided conversation.

While I appreciate all comments (as I say, if you don't tell me, I don't know what you are thinking), it is impossible to respond to anonymous comments and even the best comments or suggestions lose some of their impact if we can't follow up.

Also, I feel that we encourage open communication and while we may not agree, I certainly would hope that residents feel comfortable in openly making comments, suggestions and complaints.  We may disagree, but we will listen and discuss the situation, and we cannot discuss it without a contact number or name.

We encourage residents to leave their name or at least a contact number or e-mail.  While we consider all comments, suggestions and complaints, the fact hat we can respond to and discuss problem areas with the person(s) directly affected will benefit all of us.

THIRD ANNUAL COMMUNITY CLEANUP DAY

Saturday, May 5th, 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Beverle Rivera Drive, across from Windward Slopes Park

The third annual community cleanup day will be held on May 5, 2012.  As in past years the location of the event will be at the end of Beverle Rivera Drive across from Windward Slopes Park.   Staffs from Republic Services, Southeast Recycling Technologies and Lakeland will be on hand to unload and sort trash for proper disposal.   The hours of the event are from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.  We urge all Lakeland citizens to take advantage of this opportunity to dispose of those hard to get rid of items that you have been meaning to do something about.

 

 Items we will be accepting are:• Bulky trash
• E-waste (fluorescents, monitors, computers, printers, cell phones, batteries, etc.)
• White goods (washers, dryers)
• Tires (limit of 4)
• Scrap metals
• Construction debris (residential only)
• Small appliances
• Yard waste

 

 Items we will NOT be accepting:• Refrigerators and air conditioners
• Oils
• Paint
• Anti-freeze

Most of the items we will not be accepting may be disposed of at the Memphis and Shelby County Hazardous Waste Facility located at 6305 Haley Rd. in Shelby Farms. Call 901- 576-6851 for details on what types of waste the facility does and does not accept and their hours of operation.  Used motor oil can be recycled at auto part stores such as Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, and O’Reillys Auto Parts. Lakeland resident Johnny Clark will pick up refrigerators, air conditioners, hot water heaters and other large appliances to be recycled at no charge. He can be reached at 901-266-4947.

RECYCLING

 

Lakeland's “Get Caught Recycling” program is to encourage increased recycling. “Get Caught Recycling” rewards residents who have recyclables out for curbside pickup on their collection day.  It truly “pays” for several Lakeland residents to recycle! Thank you to all our award winners for their dedication to recycling.

 

Household addresses are selected in a random drawing. A City representative checks the bins at the houses in the order of the draw.  Four households each month that have at least three different types of recycle material receive $50.  The winners "caught recycling" are invited to the Lakeland Board of Commissioners meeting the following month for recognition by the Board, and to receive their checks. Items that can be recycled and qualify for the contest are glass, metal cans, aluminum cans, plastics (remove caps and leave labels attached), newspapers, and cardboard boxes broken down to fit inside the recycle bin.

At this level, players first hit a “thrown ball”,

and continue to learn baseball concepts while working to improve basic skills

CAMP INVENTION RETURNS THIS SUMMER!

In partnership with Invent Now, Lakeland Elementary is pleased to offer the nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention program to children entering grades one through six. This exciting, weeklong summer adventure in creativity immerses children in imaginative play that reinforces and supplements school-year learning in the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Children will work together to seek innovative solutions to real-world problems and sharpen critical 21st century learning skills such as teamwork and creative problem solving as they rotate through four modules each day that disguise learning as fun.

This exciting week of four fun-filled modules begins on June 4, 2012, when Michele Dial (jdial@scsk12.org) will direct the Camp Invention ENVISION program. In the Inventeureka™ module, children will venture on the Ci6000 Space Modulator Time Machine for a fantasy adventure. Children will build their own inventions and learn to adapt certain features for various situations. Participants spend their time navigating an island via upcycled ships and learning the power of combining magnetism and electricity during the Magnetropolis™ module. In the I Can Invent: Balloon Burst™ module, children will design balloon bursting machines, while learning the importance of gears, motors, springs, and magnets. Finally, in the Action and Adventure Games™ module, a participant favorite, children will combine physical activity and creativity during fun, energetic games. Games are based on children’s ages and ability.

 

Lakeland educators will facilitate program modules, and enthusiastic high school and college students will serve as Leadership Interns – ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children.

NOTABLE TREES OF TENNESSEE ON EXHIBIT AT LAKELAND CITY HALL

The City of Lakeland is pleased to announce the “Notable Trees of Tennessee” exhibit at City Hall.  Get to know the importance of the "Notable Trees of Tennessee," featuring photographs of 36 trees selected for the Landmark and Historic Tree Register and the Champion Tree Program, when the Tennessee Urban Forestry traveling photographic exhibition is displayed at Lakeland City Hall from April 2nd to May 5th.

 

The Tennessee Urban Forestry Council (TUFC) worked with professional and amateur photographers from across Tennessee who volunteered their time and expertise for this unique TUFC traveling exhibition.

 

Tennessee is abundant with trees noted for their beauty, size, longevity and historical distinctions. This exhibit displays trees from the TUFC Landmark and Historic Tree Register and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry Champion Tree Program. The Landmark and Historic Tree Register recognizes trees for historical, geographical or cultural significance. The Champion Tree Program recognizes the largest known trees statewide for each species, several of which are also national champions.

 

Although many of these significant trees have stood for more than a century as witnesses to the history and development of our state, the long-term viability of our urban trees may be in jeopardy. Large trees are true champions in their capacity to mitigate environmental problems, such as air pollution and stormwater runoff, but they are still vulnerable to the many challenges of the urban environment. Today's urban areas require that we plan ahead for beautiful trees. Appropriate site and tree selection; proper arbor care; best management practices for insect and disease control; and smart growth to offset urban sprawl are all important. With care and forethought, notable trees will always be present in our urban landscape.

 

We invite everyone in the community to visit City Hall to view the “Notable Trees of Tennessee” exhibit.  Lakeland City Hall is open Monday - Friday from 8 AM - 4:30 PM.

Lakeland Outdoors Event scheduled May 5, 2012 MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the first ever "Lakeland Outdoors" event scheduled for Saturday, May 5, 2012 at International Harvester Park.

The Lakeland Natural Resources Board is scheduling the event and events will include demonstrations on tree climbing and even include jumping from tree to tree, a Barbecue lunch (for a fee), free seedlings, prizes, crafts, sidewalk chalk, face painting, a wide variety of exhibitors and events, to be announced in the near future.

Watch for the announcement, but reserve the date now for this exciting event!

Transition Planning Commission "Listening Tour" Monday, January 30 in Arlington

The Shelby County Transition Planning Commission "Listening Tour" is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, January 30, 2012 at the Arlington High School Auditorium. No Lakeland site visit has been scheduled.

The Commission's "Listening Tour" purpose is to hear comments from the community regarding the Shelby County Schools including the former Memphis City Schools after the Memphis City Schools abandoned their Charter.

Since no Lakeland site visit is planned, this is Lakeland residents' best opportunity to comment to the Transition Planning Committee.

Barbara Hicks original art on display at Lakeland City Hall

Barbara Hicks is displaying her original art at Lakeland City Hall, 10001 Highway 70. The display includes a wide variety of her art and we encourage residents to stop by and view her work during normal business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Remember, refuse collection/recycling collection delayed one day this week!

Monday, January 2, 2012 is a holiday, so Monday refuse collection/recycling routes will be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday routes will be picked up Wednesday, Wednesday routes will be picked up Thursday, Thursday routes will be picked up Friday and Friday routes will be picked up on Saturday.

Lakeland Senior Center nears completion, parking lot paved!

The Lakeland Senior Center is nearing completion, including the paving of the IH Clubhouse/Lakeland Senior Center parking lot!

The Senior Center is expected to be finished in January. Furniture etc. will be purchased with donations made to the Senior Center either at the Lakeland Trustmark Bank or the Lakeland Supplemental Income program.

The IH Clubhouse renovation is expected to start in February. An estimated completion date is not available.

A Grand Opening to include both the Lakeland Senior Center and IH Clubhouse is being planned after the renovations are complete.

Donations are still being accepted either at the Lakeland Trustmark Bank or by donating to the Lakeland Supplemental Income program (click here for form).

Donations may be tax deduction for tax year 2011 is made today!

Donations to the Lakeland Supplemental Income program may be tax deductible for the 2011 tax year if donations are made by December 31, 2011.

Donations may be unspecified, or directed for the Lakeland Senior Center, City beautification, Parks development, youth programs, or emergency management programs. All funds are restricted to being spent only for the designated category.

The Lakeland Supplemental Income Program has reached 100 donations totaling $7,695. All funds are restricted to the category specified by the person donating the funds.

Lakeland Supplemental Income Progress

As of Wednesday, December 14, 41 persons have contributed a total of $3,515 to the Lakeland Supplemental Income Program.

Transportation Report available

The Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR) staff has published a new staff report, Getting There: Increasing Access to Destinations, which is the final in a four-part series on transportation and land use planning in Tennessee.

The report addresses the potential for accessibility-based land use and transportation planning to assist the state and its local governments in maximizing public investments, enhancing economic development, improving job accessibility, reducing transportation costs, and improving access to transportation for disadvantaged populations.

Accessibility-based planning focuses on making it easier to get from location to location, while traditional mobility-based planning focuses on the trip itself. It considers issues such as density, mixed land uses, connection of road networks, transportation options, and integrated transportation modes.

Lakeland population is 12,430

Lakeland's population, according to the 2010 Federal Census was 12,430 in 2010. Based on housing permits, the actual population is an estimated 13,000.

The Lakeland population was unfortunately incorrectly stated in a December 14, 2012 story in the Commercial Appeal. Errors happen, and we understand that, but figures in a respected newspaper are frequently accepted as fact and the correction isn't seen by many readers.

Also, while it is correct that the City of Lakeland depends on Shelby County for emergency services, Lakeland residents and businesses do pay the normal "fire fees" for the excellent service provided by the Shelby County Fire Department. Lakeland residents also pay Shelby County property taxes which support the outstanding service provided by the Shelby County Sheriff Department.

Refuse Collection changes for December

There will be no refuse collection or recycling pickup on Monday, December 26 or Monday, January 2.

All scheduled collections will be delayed one day. (Monday schedule on Tuesday, etc. with Friday schedule picked up on Saturday).

Lakeland Supplemental Revenue Program Form and Information

Lakeland residents and businesses can support their favorite project(s) by donating for furnishings for the Senior Center, City Beautification (entrance treatments, landscaping, litter control, street sweeping), park development, youth programs and emergency management.

Each donation is segregated into a “restricted” fund so that money donated is used only for that specific project. Any amount of donation is acceptable and will be acknowledged immediately.

A letter was recently sent to all residents advising of the program with a form for submitting a donation or a form can be downloaded here.

Donated funds will enhance services, not substitute for already budgeted items.
