January 29, 2009--SAVE THE DATE! Land Development Regulations meeting

City of Lakeland Public Meeting

Land Development Regulations meeting scheduled January 29, 2008

A public presentation on the Lakeland land development regulation project will be held at 7:00.p.m. Thursday, January 29, 2009 at the IH Club on 4523 Canada Road. This project will substantially impact all future development in Lakeland. All interested residents, developers, and builders should attend this meeting!

This joint meeting of the Lakeland Board of Commissioners and the Municipal Planning Commission is a public presentation about the ongoing project to rewrite Lakeland’s land development regulations. This project impacts all future development in Lakeland.

Lakeland contracted with Farr Assoc., of Chicago, IL, in early 2007 to begin a process of rewriting its land development regulations (codes) to implement its Comprehensive Plan, move toward more sustainable development practices, and consider other practical and aesthetic needs of the City. Doug Farr, principal of Farr Assoc., will be giving the presentation.

Doug Farr, principal of Farr Assoc., will discuss his new book, Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design With Nature. Named a top ten book of 2008 by Planetizen, Sustainable Urbanism is a guidebook that visualizes Sustainable Urbanism—the growing sustainable design convergence that integrates walkable and transit-served urbanism with high-performance infrastructure and buildings— as the normal pattern of development in the United States by 2030.

Using detailed facts and case studies, Doug Farr, the inagural chair of the US Green Building Council’s LEED for Neighborhood Development, describes how we can change the built environment to benefit generations to come, and how this concept is being applied to the new Lakeland development practices.

Farr Associates is widely regarded as one of the most sustainable planning and architecture firms in the country. Their mission is to design sustainable human environments putting human social and economic benefit on par with aesthetic and environmental aims. Nationally, Farr Associates has developed sustainable master plans or development codes for a wide variety of neighborhoods and districts.

Remember new refuse schedule

Remember the new Refuse/recycle schedule next week! Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday is your new pickup day for refuse, recycling and yard material and pickup is on a weekly basis! (I expect I am more likely to forget that Monday is my new pickup day in future weeks rather than the first week!)

See www.lakelandtn.gov for the new schedule or earlier blogs.

Asphalt for Street Repairs

The City has several major street repairs where asphalt is needed to complete the repairs.

The companies making asphalt shut down before Christmas and generally do not start making asphalt until the weather is suitable for laying asphalt after January 1. (Generally over 40 degrees for several days .)

As soon as asphalt is available, the City will buy asphalt to complete the repairs.

New Schedule on traffic signals, I-40 and Canada Road and Canada Road and Highway 70

TRAFFIC SIGNALS AT CANADA ROAD AND I-40 INTERCHANGE: We were recently advised the traffic signals for the I-40/Canada Road interchange have been bid and are under review by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. This is for "temporary" traffic signals that will regulate traffic until the new interchange is constructed.

After review and approval by the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the bids will be awareded by the Shelby County Commission. Assuming the bids are reviewed and approved by TDOT within 30 days, there is a good chance the bids could award the bids for traffic signals in February.

Based on this schedule, we estimate the interchange should have traffic signals by this Summer.

This project is funded by a federal grant administered by Shelby County. We appreciate the efforts of Shelby County in expediting this project.

CANADA ROAD/HIGHWAY 70 INTERSECTION TRAFFIC SIGNALS: We were recently advised that the bid schedule for the traffic signals at this intersection has been moved up to June, 2009.

There are so many varying factors on this project, we can't really estimate a completion date until later, but at least the project is currently scheduled to be bid in June rather than October.

We will provide updates as soon as we hear any information on these projects.
